If you were to ask any dog person why they prefer canines to felines, they’d probably tell you, “Because dogs are more affectionate than cats.” But contrary to popular belief, there are plenty of affectionate cat breeds that are just as attentive and cuddly as pups. Some of these devoted cats are content to sit in your lap while you pet them for hours. Others will actually run to greet you at the door. From the snuggly to the seriously sentimental, we’ve rounded up the sweetest cats out there, and they’ll provide just as many cuddles as any dog.

Scottish Fold

Though best known for its folded ears (which are the result of a genetic mutation, according to Vet Street), the Scottish Fold can also be recognized for its rounded head, sweet eyes, and total devotion to its owners. This short-haired, medium-sized cat gets along well with everyone and loves to follow you around, so if you're looking for a little shadow, this is the breed for you.

Ragdoll

The most striking feature of this large cat breed may just be its beautiful blue eyes, but the Ragdoll is just as well known for providing plenty of love. Originally bred from free-roaming cats, according to Cat Fanciers' Associates, this breed's trademark is its uniquely endearing and good-natured temperament.

Birman

The Birman (or the "Sacred Cat of Burma," as it is also called) is best known for its piecing blue eyes and long, silken coat, which you'll love running your hands through. According to Vet Street, the elegant Birman isn't as active as other breeds, making it far better suited to cuddling than playing.

Persian

Ever since the Persian came into vogue during the Victorian era, this fluffy cat has become the most popular pedigreed cat in the US (and perhaps even the world), according to Vet Street. Expressive and affectionate, this cat may be high-maintenance, but it will make up for that extra grooming with soft cuddles and lots of love.

Sphynx

A cat doesn't need tons of fluff to cuddle, and that's definitely true of the Sphynx. These cats have big personalities and a constant need for attention, according to Pet MD, so it's not uncommon for this hairless cat to greet its owners at the door and occupy a lap at all times.

Siamese

One of the oldest and most well-known cat breeds, according to Vet Street, Siamese cats aren't just pretty to look at. This curious breed loves nothing more than to be around people, and while a bit demanding, you can count on a Siamese to give you its undivided attention whenever you're around.

Balinese

Since the Balinese and the Siamese are closely related, according to Pet Finder, they share several traits, including their sweet disposition. These intuitive kitties have the ability to read and adapt to their owners' moods, and they will always be there to provide comfort when their loved ones are feeling down.

Maine Coon

This native American long-haired cat was first recognized as a specific breed in Maine, according to Cat Fanciers' Association, but it's become popular everywhere for its super-soft coat and love of snuggles. Though large, the Maine Coon has earned a reputation as a "gentle giant," as the breed is sought-after for family pets and therapy cats.

Devon Rex

Impish and big-eyed, this almost-dog-like cat is totally unique in both appearance and personality. Cat Fanciers' Association notes that the Devon Rex does not discriminate and is happy in the company of pretty much anyone, human or animal.

Cornish Rex

With its large ears and svelte body, the sweet, people-oriented Cornish Rex is a total original. Cat Fanciers' Association notes that the one of the most distinct feature of the breed is its curly coat, which is short, soft as velvet, and perfect for lots of petting.

Burmese

While the Burmese may not be terribly friendly with other cats, as Hill's Pet notes, this cat is utterly devoted to humans. The breed starts off active when younger, but as a Burmese matures, it becomes far more placid and is content to sit quietly and enjoy petting and belly rubs.

Bombay

This unique kitty (which is a cross between a sable Burmese and a black American Shorthair, according to Vet Street) is known for being great with just about anyone, including children, dogs, and other cats. Its soft, velvety coat is short, making it easy to groom and even better to cuddle without too much fur ending up on your clothes.
