All cats are created equal and cuteness is subjective, but there’s no denying that some cute cat breeds are universally considered adorable (and no, we’re not just talking about kittens). Perhaps you’re only into the fluffiest of felines. Perhaps you’re a sucker for cats with big blue eyes. Everyone has their own opinion about what makes for an utterly adorable feline, but no matter what you love in a cat, these cute cat breeds are sure to make just about anyone melt into a happy puddle.

You’ve probably heard of Maine Coons, Persians, and American Bobtails, but how about Toygers, Ragdolls, or LaPerms? Natural breeds aren’t the only cats worth adopting, and some of the cutest cats out there have pretty fascinating origin stories. With cats that are fluffy, curly-haired, striped, and spotted, we’ve rounded up 14 of the cutest cat breeds, and we hope you’re ready to squeal with joy.

Bengal

If you're searching for a kitty that doesn't look so far removed from its wild ancestors, then a bengal cat will be everything you've ever wanted. Bengals are super affectionate and playful, according to Petfinder, so they make great family pets.

Birman

Birmans are large cats with distinct physical characteristics, such as the different colored fur on their face and ears. They can be a bit quiet, and tend to attach themselves to one person, according to Hill's, so prepare to form a close bond with your Birman.

Russian Blue

Russian Blue cats have a coat that's so gray it's almost blue. They're soft and shiny, and undoubtedly some good looking cats. They're also highly intelligent and quite independent, according to Petfinder.

Ragdoll

The most striking feature of this large cat breed may just be its beautiful blue eyes. Though the Ragdoll sheds, Cat Fanciers' Associates mentions that the absence of an insulating undercoat on this breed results in reduced shedding and matting, which is a definitely plus (besides its incredibly cuteness).

Egyptian Mau

The Egyptian Mau is known for its wild agility and speed, and Cat Fanciers' Association also notes that this breed is the only domesticated cat with a naturally occurring spotted coat. You'll also find this cat to be exceptionally intelligent and fiercely loyal, making it the perfect companion.

Himalayan

Though usually medium in size, the Himalayan's masses of fur can make this breed appear much larger than it actually is, according to Hill's Pets. Kitten-like and playful, this cat is just as likely to be found curled in your lap as it is running around your house.

Ragamuffin

Similar to the Himalayan, the Ragamuffin isn't nearly as big as it appears, and it has all of its wild fur to thank for that. Along with its oval-blue eyes and silky soft coat, Hill's Pets notes that this breed is known its placidity and adaptability, making it a great choice for a small home, like an apartment.

Toyger

According to VetStreet, the Toyger is a cross between a Bengal cat and a striped domestic shorthair, resulting in a medium-sized cat with tiger-like branching stripes and orange-and-black or brown coloration. This muscular cat has a sweet, calm personality and is known for being outgoing and friendly, making it perfect for families (even those with small children and other pets!).

American Bobtail

According to Cat Fanciers' Association, the American Bobtail was developed by selectively breeding feral domestic cats possessing a natural bobtail, allowing them to survive feral environments. Wildly intelligent, this medium- to large-sized cat loves to play and is known for getting along with both other cats and dogs.

Serengeti

First developed by crossing a Bengal and an Oriental Shorthair, according to Pet Guide, the Serengeti is easily recognized by its spotted coat and long, rounded ears. Friendly and self-assured, this medium-sized cat is known for getting along well with people and fellow pets alike, as well as for scaling to impressive heights.

Maine Coon

This native American long-haired cat was first recognized as a specific breed in Maine, according to Cat Fanciers' Association, and its sturdy build and thick coat makes it well-suited for harsh winters. Though large, the Maine Coon has earned a reputation as a "gentle giant," as the breed is sought-after for family pets and therapy cats.

Persian

Ever since the Persian came into vogue during the Victorian era, this fluffy cat has become the most popular pedigreed cat in the US (and perhaps even the world), according to Vet Street. Expressive and affectionate, this cat may be high-maintenance, but it will make up for that extra grooming with lots of love.

Turkish Angora

This natural breed (which has existed in Turkey since at least the 15th century, according to Vet Street) is small to medium in size, with a wedge-shaped head, long silky coat, and plumed tail. Despite its sophisticated appearance, the Turkish Angora is known as a trickster and loves to take charge, but loves showing affection just as much as it loves causing trouble.

LaPerm

The unusual appearance of the LaPerm is actually the result of a spontaneous mutation, according to Vet Street, which causes its distinctly curly coat. Surprisingly, this breed's coat is actually easy to groom and doesn’t shed much, though occasionally the LaPerm may go through a heavy shed period, after which its curly coat grows back thicker than before.
